Chuck Smith’s Abortion Comment Stirs Up Controversy

At the age of 84, Chuck Smith is still pushing on as a senior pastor at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, and also as a talk show host on K-Wave’s “Pastor’s Perspective” with Don Stewart. However, many listeners were shocked during February’s program when Smith advocated abortion.

The controversy begins when Smith and Stewart received a call from a Riverside resident who broke down in tears explaining that her doctors revealed she was having conjoined twins. She further explained the doctors recommended she have an abortion because of the possible complications of the birth.

“My heart never wants to have an abortion,” said the caller.  “I’m really praying hard and trying to believe that the Lord is going to do what he is going to do with these two little ones.”

Stewart is heard in the background sighing in disbelief and soon turns to Smith for feedback on the situation. Pastor Smith consoles the mother and says that God would not condemn her if she had the abortion. He backs his statement up by stating scripture where Jesus says, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her” (John 8:7).

“It’s awfully hard to actually suggest abortion,” said Pastor Smith. “In a case like this were the life expectancy is so bleak, I’m sure that the Lord would not condemn her if she went ahead and had an abortion at this early stage of the development of the fetus.”

Many blogs and YouTube videos are circulating on the Web right now dealing with this issue. Some have written very harshly about Smith’s comments and even asked for him to revise his statements. Watch the video below to hear the whole call in context.

  1. We love you pastor Chuck Smith!!

  2. Chuck Smith is a Saint. Thank God he stepped out of what people would deem legalism to help in this situation. People who judge will be judged. God Bless you.

  3. I think even some politicians would advocate for other options than abortion, it’s sad that this comment came from a pastor.

  4. I was shocked, he spoke to soon, faulty council

  5. Thanks for your comment.

  6. One giant step backwards for anti-abortion
activists. Pastor Chuck Smith is now playing God. Smith chooses who lives and who dies.
